Top 10 2018 Texas Soccer Stories: # 10-6

First, Clint Dempsey announced his retirement from soccer on August 29. The Nacogdoches native is certainly the best male player ever to come from Texas and, arguably, also the best male player in U.S. Soccer history. During his career in MLS and England, Dempsey scored 129 goals. He also finished with 57 goals for the U.S. Mens National Team, tied for first all-time, and is the only American to score goals in three FIFA World Cups. Top 10 2017 Texas Soccer Stories-#9 Tumultuous season for the Houston Dash

It was a very interesting year for the Houston Dash-unfortunately for disappointing reasons.  Heading into the 2017 season the Dash were seeking their first National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) playoff appearance, after not qualifying in each of the first three years of the clubs existence. Next week I will roll out my choices for the Top 10 Texas soccer stories of 2017.  In compiling this list, it became apparent that there were far more than ten stories, both positive and adverse, that should be recognized.  This “other stories” list is certainly not comprehensive.  In a state as big as Texas it is hard to stay on top of everything that happens in the soccer landscape.  If there is anything I have missed after the Top 10 next week, please let me know and I will correct any obvious misses. US Soccer Development Academy Kicks Off 2017-18 season

FC Dallas U18 Academy-Dallas Cup 2017 (Courtesy of FC Dallas) Earlier this month the US Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) began the 2017/2018 season throughout the country.  The Boys Development Academy was started in 2007 and this year has begun a girls academy that follows similar philosophies and competitive structures as the boys program. The USSDA currently has 197 total clubs, comprised of teams across six age groups in the boys program: U-12, U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16/17, and U-18/19 and four age groups in the girls program: U-14, U-15, U-16/17, and U-18/19.
