Since their founding in 2016, San Antonio FC (SAFC) has made three trips to Frisco during the preseason to play matches against Major League Soccer’s (MLS) FC Dallas (FCD). Tomorrow night the script is flipped as FCD makes its way to Toyota Field to play in the Alamo City at 7:30 p.m SAFC coach Alen Marcina talked about the benefits of this match for both sides after training this morning. The United Soccer League (USL) officially unveiled its vision for the future of the league’s Academy system earlier this year when it rolled out a new tier in the league’s identity called “USL Academy”. This weekend in San Antonio the league will take the first steps to turn this vision into reality when the USL Western Conference Academy Cup Regional Event is contested at San Antonio FC’s S.T.A.R. A sellout crowd of Austin Bold soccer fans, who witnessed the joint home and stadium opener for their United Soccer League Championship (USL) expansion franchise, were rewarded when the Bold defeated rival San Antonio FC (SAFC) 1-0 at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in South Austin Saturday night. A 77th minute goal by Austin’s Brazilian forward Kleber Giacomazzi , nicknamed “Gladiator”, was the difference in a match that reflected the intensity of the emerging I-35 rivalry between the teams from Austin and San Antonio. Austin Bold FC will make a big splash Saturday night when they play their inaugural home soccer match against I-35 rivals San Antonio FC (SAFC). The evening will also mark the opening of the Bold’s new 5,000 seat stadium at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) raceway and entertainment venue south of Austin. The new $5 million stadium, which includes a covered grandstand and individual chair back seating, took only five months to construct from groundbreaking to completion.
