Week 6 includes the second-leg, this time in West Texas, of the rivalry between Ft. Worth Vaqueros and Midland-Odessa.  A hot Dutch Lions side will try to hand Laredo Heat their first loss of the season.  Rafters FC host two games this week in Independence Stadium and finally, Houston Regals SCA and Tyler FC will both be looking for their first points of the season when they face each other in Houston.

Week 5 Recap

Wednesday, May 30:

Laredo Heat SC-4     FC Brownsville-1     TAMIU Stadium, Laredo

A 3rd minute goal from Ziyad Fares (his second of the season) got the ball rolling for Laredo Heat and they never looked back, winning 4-1 over FC Brownsville, their 4th consecutive victory to start the season.  Guillermo Diaz goal put the home side up 2-0 (his third of the season) in the 21st minute temporarily, but Brownsville midfielder  Juan Lozoya pulled one back shortly after.  Midfielder Gabriel Rodriquez, who assisted on the first goal, restored the Heat’s two-goal margin right after the start of the second half.  A late goal from midfielder Rafael Montabes put the game away for Laredo.

Saturday, June 2:

FC Brownsville-5     Houston Regals SCA-2     Brownsville Sports Park, Brownsville

After a decisive three goal loss to Laredo Heat on Wednesday, FC Brownsville Coyotes returned to their goal scoring form with an impressive 5-2 victory over Houston Regals SCA.  Local product and forward Alan Cortinas led the way with 4 goals and midfielder Martin Sauceda scored the other.  Houston Regals are now 0-5, with a negative 16 goal differential and halfway through the season, face an almost impossible road to make the playoffs in the Lone Star Conference.

Midland-Odessa Sockers FC-3     Katy 1895 FC-0      St. John XXIII College Preperatory- Katy

It was a big night for hat-trick scorers in NPSL Texas action.  Midland-Odessa FC’s Nathan Regis scored all three goals in the second half during a decisive 3-0 win over Katy 1895 FC on the road.  Regis attended college in North Carolina, was the NCAA Division II Player of the Year twice and was invited by MLS to their January scouting combine in 2017.

Ft. Worth Vaqueros FC-3     Tyler FC-1     Hayes Soccer Fields, Tyler

Two second half goals, a long-range shot from Declan O’Shea and one off a corner kick by substitute Harris Partain, led the Vaqueros to a 3-1 road victory over the winless Tyler FC Kings.  Bobby Edet’s 28th minute goal opened the scoring for the Vaqueros.  Emanuel Santos added the only Tyler goal right before halftime.  Like the Houston Regals, the Kings have lost 5 straight matches with a negative 16 goal differential to open the season and have virtually no chance to advance to the postseason.

Dutch Lions FC-4    Shreveport Rafters FC-2     Dutch Lions Soccer Facility-Conroe

The Dutch Lions, building on the decisive win last weekend over the Vaqueros, defeated the previously undefeated Shreveport Rafters FC 4-2 at home.  The Lions took the lead in the 23rd minute when Jacob Powell scored.  Rafters defender Jaxon Lambert tied the match with a header right before the end of the first half.  Dutch Lions retook the lead through Santiago Vazquez in the 56th minute and goals by substitute Dylan Armstrong and Yinka Lawal, within a seven minute span later in the second half, effectively closed out the match.  A late free-kick consolation goal from Rafters midfielder Hayden Tucker closed the gap, but the Dutch Lions held on for their third win of the season.
