Texas MLS, USL and NWSL roster updates and week of February 18th schedule (sixth edition)

For those not following roster moves for all of the Texas professional teams, I am providing a weekly summary of activity from the previous week during the preseason.  Though they are not a Texas team, I am tracking Columbus Crew due to the announced potential move to Austin in 2019.

MLS rosters are limited to 30 players with 2 of these slots dedicated only to homegrown players.  Each club has been allocated 8 international slots-which can be traded.  In 2017, USL rosters were limited to 30 players on each clubs Master Roster-which is the official player roster for USL play.  A maximum of 7 of those players can be internationals.  NWSL teams can have no more than 20 players, with 4 of those slots internationals.  Roster rules will be relaxed in 2018 to allow non-retired Boston Breakers players selected in the January 30 Dispersal Draft to not count against roster limits.

Listed below are the current rosters for all teams with updates announced this week highlighted.  Links to the transaction announcements are included if you are interested in learning more about the players.

Next week activities (February 18-25):

  • FC Dallas FC plays the final preseason match at the Mobile Mini Cup in Tucson Saturday, February 17 against the Portland Timbers.  The team then travels to Panama City to open its two-legged CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series against Tauro FC on Wednesday night.
  • Houston Dynamo will play in Tucson against New York Red Bulls on Saturday evening, February 17.  The Dynamo will stay in Arizona, playing USL’s Phoenix Rising on Wednesday and a TBD opponent on Saturday, February 24 for the final preseason match.
  • Columbus Crew plays its first match of the Carolina Challenge Cup tournament in Charleston, SC Saturday evening, February 17 against Atlanta United.  The Crew will continue to train in Charleston and then play host side Charleston Battery on Wednesday.  The final preseason match will be against Minnesota United on the last day of the Challenge Cup on February 24.
  • San Antonio FC will also play in Tucson at the Mobile Mini Cup when they match-up against New England Revolution on Saturday, February 17.  After returning to San Antonio, the team will continue preseason preparations when they play two closed door scrimmages against St. Edwards University at 11 a.m. and UT Rio Grande Valley at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24.
  • Rio Grande Valley FC will play a preseason match against Houston Baptist University on Saturday, February 17.  No further preseason details have been announced.
