Texas MLS, USL and NWSL roster updates and week of February 11th schedule (fifth edition)

Posted by

For those not following roster moves for all of the Texas professional teams, I am providing a weekly summary of activity from the previous week during the preseason.  Though they are not a Texas team, I am tracking Columbus Crew due to the announced potential move to Austin in 2019.

MLS rosters are limited to 30 players with 2 of these slots dedicated only to homegrown players.  Each club has been allocated 8 international slots-which can be traded.  In 2017, USL rosters were limited to 30 players on each clubs Master Roster-which is the official player roster for USL play.  A maximum of 7 of those players can be internationals.  NWSL teams can have no more than 20 players, with 4 of those slots internationals.  Roster rules will be relaxed in 2018 to allow non-retired Boston Breakers players selected in the January 30 Dispersal Draft to not count against roster limits.

Listed below are the current rosters for all teams with updates announced this week highlighted.  Links to the transaction announcements are included if you are interested in learning more about the players.

Next week activities (February 10-17):

  • FC Dallas FC hosts San Antonio FC at Toyota Soccer Center on Sunday.  The team then departs for the Mobile Mini Sun Cup in Tucson, Arizona on Tuesday.  FC Dallas will play the New England Revolution on Wednesday.  Players not seeing time in the first match against New England will play versus the Revolution Reserves on Thursday.  The final match in Tucson is against the Portland Timbers next Saturday.
  • Houston Dynamo will play an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, February 10 in Houston before also traveling to Tucson to compete in the Mobile Mini Cup.  On Wednesday the Dynamo will play Portland Timbers and the New York Red Bulls on Saturday evening, February 17.
  • Columbus Crew play for third place in the Pacific Rim Cup against Japanese side Iwaki FC at 8 p.m. CST on Saturday, February 10.  After returning from Hawaii, the Crew have a short-turnaround before they travel to Charleston, SC to take part in the Carolina Challenge Cup.  Their first match in this tournament will be Saturday evening, February 17 against Atlanta United.
  • San Antonio FC travels north to play FC Dallas on Sunday and then also heads to Tucson for the Mobile Mini Cup to play a single match against New England Revolution on Saturday, February 17.
  • Rio Grande Valley FC will play a preseason match against UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday, February 10.  No further preseason details have been announced.
  • Houston Dash begin camp on February 19 and play their first preseason match against the Dynamo Academy on March 18
