Austin Women’s Soccer College Conference Tournament Update

All six Austin area Women’s college soccer teams advanced to their respective conference tournaments.  None of the teams advanced past the semifinal round and both DI teams lost opening round matches to lower seeded teams.

NCAA Women’s College Cup brackets will be released on Monday, November 6.  Tournament play begins next weekend at regional sites.

NCAA Division I:  (Regular season conference record)

Texas State (San Marcos) Bobcats Women: (8-2-0-2nd place in Sun Belt Conference)

The Bobcats lost a Sun Belt Conference quarterfinal match to Coastal Carolina 2-1 in the second overtime in Foley, AL.  Texas State had taken an early 5th minute lead when Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year Kassi Hormuth pounced on a loose ball.  A second half goal by Coastal Carolina set up the golden goal winner by Mackenzie Gibbs in the 105th minute.

UT-Austin Longhorns Women:  (5-2-2-4th place in Big 12 Conference)

The Longhorns lost an overtime quarterfinal match to Baylor in the Big 12 Conference tournament on Wednesday in Kansas City, MO.  A 72nd minute goal by Katie Glenn had put the Longhorns up in the match.  Baylor equalized in the 87th minute on a goal from Lauren Piercy and won the match in the first extra-time on a 98th minute golden goal match winner from Julie James.  Baylor ended up winning the conference title on Sunday, defeating TCU 2-1 on another golden goal, this time by Lauren Piercy.

NCAA Division II: 

St. Edwards Hilltoppers Women: (9-2-3-2nd place in Heartland Conference)

The Hilltoppers lost to Rogers State on penalties (2-2; 6-5 penalties) in the semifinal round of the Heartland Conference tournament on Saturday.  The Hilltoppers had built a 2-0 lead by the 15th minute, but a 74th minute Rogers State goal tied the match.  After a scoreless overtime, Rogers State won on penalties in the eighth round.  Dallas Baptist defeated Rogers State 2-0 on Sunday to win its third straight Heartland Conference title.

NCAA Division III:

Concordia Tornados Women: (6-6-0-7th place in American Southwest Conference)

The Tornados suffered a 4-0 first-round defeat to Mary Hardin Baylor (MHB) in Belton on October 31.  Host Hardin Simmons from Abilene defeated MHB 3-0 on Sunday for the American Southwest Conference Championship.

Southwestern Pirates Women: (2-8-0-last place in SCAC)

The SCAC 5th seeded Pirates lost a quarterfinal match on penalties to host Centenary (0-0; 3-2 penalties).  Centenary outshot Southwestern 22-2 and were only denied a victory in regulation by 14 saves from Pirates goalkeeper Mary Cardone.

NAIA: 

Huston-Tillotson Rams Women: (7-3-0-tied for 4th place in Red River Conference)

The Rams lost a first round Red River tournament match in Houston against University of St. Thomas on penalty kicks (0-0; 3-0 penalties).  The semifinals and finals of this tournament will be hosted by Texas A&M-Texarkana next weekend.
