There are a 13 University Soccer Men’s and Women’s Programs (excluding club teams) in the San Antonio region. 3-NCAA Division I, 2-Division II, 6-Division III and 2-NAIA teams in total. Here is an update on how these programs are doing as they near the end of their regular seasons.
NCAA Division I:
University of Incarnate Word Cardinals: (3-9-1 Overall—1-5-0-last place in Western Athletic Conference)
UIW’s Men have faced a very challenging season to this point. Last weekend was a continuation as the Cardinals suffered 2 shutout losses on the road against Grand Canyon and UNLV. 4 games remain in the season. This weekend the Cardinals are home to face San Jose State and CSU Bakersfield at Benson Stadium.
Incarnate Word Women: (2-11-0 Overall—1-7-0-tied for last place in Southland Conference)
The Women’s soccer team returns home for the final three games of the regular season, beginning with Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State this weekend. Six straight losses have compounded a tough season also. Last weekend the team suffered a tough 1-0 loss in Beaumont to Lamar and then a blowout loss to McNeese St. in Louisiana, the second 5 goal or more loss in the last 3 matches.
UT-San Antonio Roadrunners Women: (2-12-0 Overall—1-6-0-13th place in Conference USA)
It has not been a good year for San Antonio NCAA DI soccer and the Roadrunners unfortunately are facing similar issues as UIW. 5 straight losses, the most recent being a 3-1 home loss to UAB last Sunday, are a continuation of a season that has delivered 6 losses of 3 goals or more. 3 matches remain, the first Thursday night against WKU at home.
NCAA Division II:
St. Mary’s Rattlers Men: (7-6-1 Overall—5-5-0-tied for 5th place on points in the Heartland Conference)
The St. Mary’s Men’s Soccer team lost two games this past weekend in West Texas: 2-1 to UT-Permian Basin in OT and 4-1 to Lubbock Christian. The Men Rattlers return home this weekend to face Newman and Rogers State.
St. Mary’s Women: (6-6-2 Overall—3-5-2-6th place in Heartland Conference)
The Women’s Soccer Team lost two close games on the road last weekend: 2-1 to Oklahoma Christian on an 88th minute goal and 1-0 in 2OT’s to Lubbock Christian. The Women Rattlers play at home, where they are undefeated (4-0-1), to also face Newman and Rogers State this weekend.
NCAA Division III:
Schreiner (Kerrville) Mountaineers (3-10-2 Overall—1-8-2-7th place in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference-SCAC)
After concluding a 6-game road trip where the Men’s soccer team went 0-4-2, the Mountaineers returned to Kerrville and won and tied two matches against Southwestern and Texas Lutheran respectively last weekend. The final 3 games of the season are also at home, two this weekend against Austin and Centenary.
Schreiner Women: (8-5-1 Overall—7-1-1-2nd place in SCAC)
After a rough start to the season, the Mountaineer Women have won 7 of their last 8 matches, including 5 on the road. Like the Men, the final 3 games of the season will be played at home. The team got the long home stand off to an excellent start last weekend with two victories, also against Southwestern and Texas Lutheran.
Texas Lutheran (Seguin) Bulldogs Men: (5-8-2 Overall—4-6-1-5th place in SCAC)
After a stretch of six consecutive home conference matches, the Men’s Soccer team began a stretch of five away games to close the season by splitting the points last weekend in the San Antonio area: a 4-1 loss to Trinity and a 2-1 victory over Schreiner. The road stretch continues this weekend against University of Dallas and Colorado College.
Texas Lutheran Women: (5-8-1 Overall—5-4-1-3rd place in SCAC)
Last weekend the Women’s Soccer team posted two decisive wins at Gustafson Field in Seguin against Centenary and Austin College. This weekend the Women Bulldogs travel locally in the San Antonio area to play the two teams ahead of them in the standings, Trinity and Schreiner.
Trinity Tigers Men: (14-1-0 Overall—10-1-0-1st place in SCAC)
The Trinity Men’s Soccer team is ranked number 2 nationally by the United Soccer Coaches Poll. Last weekend the Men Tigers won twice against Texas Lutheran and Southwestern. The home stand continues this weekend against Centenary and Austin College.
Trinity Women: (13-1-0 Overall—9-0-0-1st place in SCAC)
Number 11 nationally ranked by the United Soccer Coaches Poll, the Trinity Women are 9-0 in conference play and have conceded only a single goal in these matches. Last weekend the Women Tigers defeated Texas Lutheran and Southwestern by a combined score of 12-0. The team remains at home this weekend and, like the Men’s squad, will also play Centenary and Austin College.
Our Lady of the Lake Saints: (7-3-1 Overall—4-1-1-tied for first place Red River Conference)
Won twice last weekend with identical 2-0 scores against University of the Southwest and Paul Quinn. 4 games remain in the season. This weekend the Women Saints will be in Houston to face St. Thomas and Victoria to play University of Houston-Victoria.
Our Lady of the Lake Women: (4-8-0 Overall—2-4-0-8th place Red River Conference)
Split their matches last weekend, losing 3-1 to University of the Southwest and winning 3-0 over Paul Quinn, both on the road. Like the Men’s team, 4 games remain in the season and the Women Saints will travel to Houston and Victoria to play the same teams this weekend.
