USL Weekly Preview-Week 9

San Antonio FC (SAFC) vs. Phoenix Rising FC

Toyota Field-San Antonio-7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 20, 2017

The main question on everybody’s minds is whether this will be the USL debut of English Premier legend Didier Drogba for Phoenix Rising.  There is no evidence to indicate that it will be tonight, though he has previously been listed as a game time decision.  Phoenix is 3-3 and sits in 11th place in the Western Conference, 13 points behind first place SAFC.

Rio Grande Valley FC (RGV FC) vs. LA Galaxy II (Los Dos)

H-E-B Park-Edinburg-7:30 p.m., Saturday May 20, 2017

  • Galaxy II will be making their second trip to Texas so far this year.  They lost to San Antonio, in their home opener, in Week 2. Much like the first team, Los Dos has struggled this year (2-5-1). The teams negative-9 goal differential is tied for worst in USL with Portland.
  • Los Dos did beat defending USL champion New York Red Bulls 2  2-1 last weekend. Galaxy II played that game with a side averaging less than 20 years of age.  That is the definition of development.  Somewhat curiously, the team will travel to Minnesota with the first team (Galaxy play there Sunday) before heading down to the Valley to play RGV FC.  Quite a long and circuitous route.
